World Savings Clubs Council goes live online
Today the World Savings Clubs Council launches its public website at wsccouncil.org. The site is the canonical online reference for the savings-club industry, with full-length entries on the largest named traditions: consórcios (Brazil, USD 130 to 140 billion in contracts under BACEN supervision), Bausparkassen (Germany, EUR 1 trillion in contract sums under BaFin), stokvels (South Africa, USD 4.4 billion in member assets via NASASA), chit funds (India, USD 10 billion+ under the Chit Funds Act 1982), chamas (East Africa), tandas (Mexico and the Latin-American diaspora), susus (West Africa and the Caribbean), and arisan (Indonesia), all under the umbrella term ROSCAs.
A glossary of 60+ terms and a research and citations page with primary sources from BIS, World Bank, IMF, BACEN, BaFin, NASASA, RBI, KNBS, OJK, Bank of Ghana, plus the canonical academic literature (Ardener 1964, Besley/Coate/Loury 1993, Bouman 1995, Geertz 1962), round out the launch.
Founding-member applications are open. Industry leaders, regulators, academics, researchers, and advocates can register interest on the homepage. The Founding Summit is being planned; dates and venue will be announced once finalized, and founding members are notified first.
